Israel’s Obstinacy

48 (A)Hear this, house of Jacob, who are named Israel
And who came from the (B)waters of Judah,
Who (C)swear by the name of the Lord
And invoke the God of Israel,
But not in truth nor in (D)righteousness.
For they name themselves after the (E)holy city,
And (F)lean on the God of Israel;
The Lord of armies is His name.
I (G)declared the former things long ago,
And they went out of My mouth, and I proclaimed them.
(H)Suddenly I acted, and they (I)came to pass.
Because I know that you are [a](J)obstinate,
And your (K)neck is an iron tendon
And your (L)forehead bronze,
Therefore I declared them to you long ago,
Before [b]they took place I proclaimed them to you,
So that you would not say, ‘My (M)idol has done them,
And my carved image and my cast metal image have commanded them.’
You have heard; look at all this.
And you, will you not declare it?
I proclaim to you (N)new things from this time,
Hidden things which you have not known.
They are created now and not long ago;
And before today you have not heard them,
So that you will not say, ‘Behold, I knew them.’
You have not (O)heard, you have not known.
Even from long ago your ear has not been open,
Because I knew that you would deal very treacherously;
And you have been called a [c](P)rebel from [d]birth.
(Q)For the sake of My name I (R)delay My wrath,
And for My praise I restrain it for you,
In order not to cut you off.
10 Behold, I have refined you, but (S)not as silver;
I have tested you in the (T)furnace of affliction.
11 (U)For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act;
For how can My name be profaned?
And I will not give My (V)glory to another.

Rescue Promised

12 “Listen to Me, Jacob, Israel [e]whom I called;
(W)I am He, (X)I am the first, I am also the last.
13 Assuredly My hand (Y)founded the earth,
And My right hand spread out the heavens;
When I (Z)call to them, they stand together.
14 (AA)Assemble, all of you, and listen!
(AB)Who among them has declared these things?
The Lord loves him; he will (AC)carry out His good pleasure against (AD)Babylon,
And His arm will be against the Chaldeans.
15 I, yes I, have spoken; indeed I have (AE)called him,
I have brought him, and He will make his ways successful.
16 (AF)Come near to Me, listen to this:
From the beginning I have (AG)not spoken in secret,
(AH)From the time it took place, I was there.
And now (AI)the Lord [f]God has sent Me, and His Spirit.”

17 This is what the Lord says, He who is your (AJ)Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to benefit,
Who (AK)leads you in the way you should go.
18 If only you had (AL)paid attention to My commandments!
Then your [g](AM)well-being would have been like a river,
And your (AN)righteousness like the waves of the sea.
19 Your [h](AO)descendants would have been like the sand,
And [i]your offspring like its grains;
(AP)Their name would never be eliminated or destroyed from My presence.”

20 (AQ)Go out from Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans!
Declare with the sound of (AR)joyful shouting, proclaim this,
(AS)Send it out to the end of the earth;
Say, “(AT)The Lord has redeemed His servant Jacob.”
21 They did not (AU)thirst when He led them through the deserts.
He (AV)made the water flow out of the rock for them;
He split the rock and (AW)the water gushed out.
22 (AX)There is no peace for the wicked,” says the Lord.

33 (A)They came to Capernaum; and when He was in (B)the house, He began to question them: “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way (C)they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. 35 And sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, (D)If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And He took a child and placed him among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 (E)Whoever [a]receives [b]one child like this in My name [c]receives Me; and whoever [d]receives Me does not [e]receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”

Dire Warnings

38 (F)John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and (G)we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. 40 (H)For the one who is not against us is [f]for us. 41 For (I)whoever gives you a cup of water to drink [g]because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.

42 (J)Whoever causes one of these [h]little ones who believe in Me to [i]sin, it is better for him if a heavy millstone is hung around his neck and he [j]is thrown into the sea. 43 And (K)if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than, having your two hands, to go into [k](L)hell, into the (M)unquenchable fire.[l] 45 And if your foot is causing you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life without a foot, than, having your two feet, to be thrown into [m](N)hell.[n] 47 And (O)if your eye is causing you to sin, throw it away; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be thrown into [o](P)hell, 48 (Q)where their worm does not die, and (R)the fire is not extinguished. 49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good; but (S)if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you [p]make it salty again? (T)Have salt in yourselves, and (U)be at peace with one another.”

Salvation Reaches to the Ends of the Earth

49 Listen to Me, you (A)islands,
And pay attention, you peoples from afar.
(B)The Lord called Me from the womb;
From the [a]body of My mother He named Me.
He has made My (C)mouth like a sharp sword,
In the (D)shadow of His hand He has concealed Me;
And He has also made Me a sharpened (E)arrow,
He has hidden Me in His quiver.
He said to Me, “(F)You are My Servant, Israel,
(G)In whom I will show My glory.”
But I said, “I have (H)labored in vain,
I have spent My strength for nothing and futility;
Nevertheless, the justice due to Me is with the Lord,
And My (I)reward is with My God.”

And now says (J)the Lord, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him, so that (K)Israel might be gathered to Him
(For I am (L)honored in the sight of the Lord,
And My God is My (M)strength),
He says, “It is too [b]small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the (N)protected ones of Israel;
I will also make You a (O)light [c]of the nations
So that My salvation may [d]reach to the (P)end of the earth.”
This is what the Lord, the (Q)Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One,
Says to the [e](R)despised One,
To the One abhorred by the nation,
To the Servant of rulers:
(S)Kings will see and arise,
Princes will also (T)bow down,
Because of the Lord who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You.”

This is what the Lord says:
“At a (U)favorable time I answered You,
And on a day of salvation I helped You;
And I will (V)watch over You and (W)make You a covenant of the people,
To [f](X)restore the land, to give as inheritances the deserted hereditary lands;
Saying to those who are (Y)bound, ‘[g]Go free,’
To those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’
They will feed along the roads,
And their pasture will be on all (Z)bare heights.
10 They will (AA)not hunger or thirst,
Nor will the scorching (AB)heat or sun strike them down;
For (AC)He who has compassion on them will (AD)lead them,
And He will guide them to (AE)springs of water.
11 I will make all (AF)My mountains a road,
And My (AG)highways will be raised up.
12 Behold, these will come (AH)from afar;
And behold, these will come from the (AI)north and from the west,
And these from the land of Aswan.”
13 (AJ)Shout for joy, you heavens! And rejoice, you earth!
Break forth into joyful shouting, mountains!
For the (AK)Lord has comforted His people
And will (AL)have compassion on His afflicted.

15 The one who spoke with me had a [a]gold measuring (A)rod to measure the city, its (B)gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the [b]rod, [c]twelve thousand stadia; its length, width, and height are equal. 17 And he measured its wall, [d]144 cubits, by (C)human [e]measurements, which are also (D)angelic measurements. 18 The material of the wall was (E)jasper; and the city was (F)pure gold, like [f]clear (G)glass. 19 (H)The foundation stones of the city wall were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was (I)jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, (J)emerald; 20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, (K)sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. 21 And the twelve (L)gates were twelve (M)pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was (N)pure gold, like transparent (O)glass.

22 I saw (P)no [g]temple in it, for the (Q)Lord God the Almighty and the (R)Lamb are its [h]temple. 23 And the city (S)has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for (T)the glory of God has illuminated it, and its lamp is the (U)Lamb. 24 (V)The nations will walk by its light, and the (W)kings of the earth [i]will bring their glory into it. 25 In the daytime (for (X)there will be no night there) (Y)its gates (Z)will never be closed; 26 and (AA)they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; 27 and (AB)nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those [j]whose names are (AC)written in the Lamb’s book of life.

The River and the Tree of Life

22 And (AD)he showed me a (AE)river of the (AF)water of life, [k]clear (AG)as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of [l]the Lamb, in the middle of (AH)its street. (AI)On either side of the river was (AJ)the tree of life, bearing twelve [m]kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (AK)There will no longer be any curse; and (AL)the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will (AM)serve Him; they will (AN)see His face, and His (AO)name will be on their (AP)foreheads. And (AQ)there will no longer be any night; and they [n]will not have need (AR)of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illuminate them; and they will (AS)reign forever and ever.
